NYU Freshman's Suicide Raises Adjustment Issues

Submitted by NYU Fall 2006, Oct 19, 2007 11:36

The title more or less explains it.

I was miserable being there... and my less-than-kind roommate didn't help. I made one or two posts on a private website that is not linked to any active email accounts or names whatsoever complaining about my former roommate's habits of trashing the room and leaving decaying food everywhere. Before I knew it, she filed three complaints at me: 1. harassment at a University level, 2. threatening, 3. excessive noise violations (the last charge was filed on the basis that she complained about how the leak of noise from my headphones was "distracting", however I never once complained about her watching TV in my room while trying to study or having phone conversations).

She also created an elaborate story about my friends threatening her.

Her complaint was filed late in the afternoon. Around eleven PM, my boyfriend at the time arrived at NYU from Lancaster (which is about a four hour commute) and was told that he was not allowed to spend the night in my dorm, since my friends were "threatening" her. They dropped my privilages without evidence or question.

It was clear my ex-roommate broke into my computer to obtain the print out copies of me complaining about her filthy habits that my RA had- she probably even used my printer, given that she didn't have a printer that worked. I felt threatened she was prying through my items- in "University Court" they could care less.

Two of the three charges were dropped, but still it is ridiculous that I had to put up with any of that nonsense to start with. I broke down because I felt screwed and neglected by the system and threatened that my former roommate was digging through my items without my permission. Later that day, I called my mom hysterically crying and she wanted me to check in with emotional support because she was concerned. I spent a couple hours jumping between offices only to discover that- SURPRISE- no one is around and, the ones that were around are booked solid throughout the weekend. I think that says a lot about the university.

That was the icing on the cake. Soon after, I left NYU.
