Engagement Goes Sour, But Both Love the Ring

It doesn't matter who broke it off, she should return the ring. (And Emily Post disagrees with von Sperling on that....) They did not enter into a legal contract (marriage), therefore they have no legal right to each others' property; he paid for the ring, it's technically his property. (She may claim it was a gift, but the ring was purchased with the sole intent of honoring their engagement....if there's no engagement, she should return it.) I can understand there are bruised feelings on both sides, but we're not talking about her keeping one of his sweaters here....that's more money than lots of people make in a year.

(Personally I have to wonder about 21-year-olds with ~$40k worth of disposable income, but that's another issue.....)
