Deal on Teacher Merit Pay May Sway National Debate

Submitted by Susan Harman, Oct 19, 2007 17:54

Shame on you, Randi. California gave schools blood money for test scores years ago and created bitterness between schools and among teachers within the schools that took the tainted money. Reading teachers accused PE teachers of doing nothing to increase scores, and therefore not deserving any money. It was ugly, and will be uglier in NYC. In fact, some teachers gave the anti-testing movement their money, in disgust.
And doesn't capitalist Bloomberg know who gets the credit is exactly the same "in most businesses"? Someone designs the product, someone else makes it, someone advertizes it, someone else sells it. Who gets the bonus? Life is more complicated than capitalism can handle.
Finally, this plan puts even more reliance on the invalid test scores. It's clear that testing has ruined our profession and our schools. If life in classrooms is nasty, brutish, and short now, just wait till theres money involved.
