My parents were in fact the first in Australia to comercially produce Lagrein through their vineyard Cobaw Ridge. Our climate (in the Macedon Ranges in Victoria...about an hour from Melbourne) is relatively similar to that of lagreins native soil, and combined with our 600metres above see level elevation, produce a product which compares in many ways to the Italian lagriens. These wines are available in the USA....Just proof that the joy of lagrien is spreading, if slowly.
