If you read closely enough to Mr. Blackwell's article, you'd think that Romney, Thompson, McCain, and Giuliani are the only Republicans running for the White House. Mr. Blackwell has fallen into the same social backward-ness that has plauged the Republican Party for years, and has painted the party as the last bastion of racism, homophobia, and proto-fascism in America. Why? Maybe it's the neoconservative tendancy to completely ignore the Constitution...Yes the Second Amendment is one freedom, but there are other amendments, namely the First and Fourth, that guard freedoms just as important and also warrent our dedication to defend.
The Republican Party has, in effect, become the dark twin of the Democratic Party: same big government tendancies, only where the Democrats support misguided attempts to legislate equality, the Republicans support misguided attempts to legislate morality.
My point: The neoconservative movement is dead. The War in Iraq is a failure, and the mis-named "War on Terror" (oh so propagandistic, for you can't wage war on a feeling) rings more hollow everyday. Only one candidate has shown in his voting record that he is capable of healing the extremely backward and laughable partisan division in this country: Ron Paul.
It's time for conservatives to show their true stripes: You can either slide into the stereotype painted for you by the left as avaricious, paternalistically racist old white men and fundamentalist christian nazis, or you can return the Republican party to the roots it so often exploits to win elections: limited government, free trade, respect for and protection of PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY and FREEDOM OF CHOICE.
Moreso than at any point in the last 50 years, we have (finally) a clear choice: there are two types of people in this world, individualists who believe in the power of the human spirit, and collectivists who think they know what is best for everyone else. It's time to elect an individual.
