General Stark's War

What we will actually get, if we go down that road, is a government big enough to promise us everything we want, but deliver it only on paper.

Witness the health care systems of Britain and Canada. Everything is free, and everyone is entitled, as soon as a bed comes open. Good luck with that appendicitis, and we'll see you in a few days.

Or take a clue from the recent hike in social security benefits. Up 2.4 percent, to offset inflation. The dollar is down something like 20% against a market basket of foreign currrencies. Oil is up sharply. Housing prices were going through the roof until they overshot. Now they're just through the ceiling. Education costs are routinely up by 5 to 10 percent per year. Entitlements will be honored by gaming the rules of what constitutes discharging the obligation.
