"Applause" is a work of great strength and this brief article is as well. Mamoulian's quote about rhythm and stylization is a model for artists in any medium or genre. I would have appreciated a lengthier look at his version of Jekyll and Hyde, which is imho the greatest horror movie during the golden era of horror flicks, but i'm sure wordspace was limited. Keep the remarkably intense pre-Code sexuality, personal pain and resolute post-Euro modernism of Whale, Browning and Mamoulian's work in mind if you have the time and/or backing to write longer essays about that era and genre...
