Former Spy's Memoir Contains a Paradox

Submitted by Mike, Oct 25, 2007 17:51

Of course, what the President actually said in the SOTU Speech was that the information came from British intelligence - which was itself factually true, even if the underlying facts were not. Also, "seeking" something is pretty vague and rather hard to disprove - but not much of a cassus belli either. Finally, I recall that the President said "Africa" not "Niger" - Africa being a fair bit bigger. Finally, I seem to recall from the time that the report Joseph Wilson gave to the CIA was not entirely congruent with his peice for the NYT.

Nevertheless, I do feel badly for Ms. Plame - although she seems to be somewhat lacking in judgment (Vanity Fair cover), her main offense was to be married to an egomaniac, and I think her heart was in the right place. It is a pity that she can only work out her grief and anger by becoming a conspiracy nut. It is also sad that Armitage seems to have skated despite his role as the principal leaker, while Miller and Libby were put through the wringer.
