Mr. Spitzer's "coalition" has not withered - it's been run over by a steamroller. The most recent victims were taken down by a steamroller going in reverse.

While it is confusing, at least, for New York State to issue documents to those who favor the term "undocumented" (as opposed to "illegal"), the Governor's true sin seems to have been washed away in a sea of xenophobia. He plans on violating Section 502(1) of New York's Vehicle & Traffic Law, which says, "...In addtion, the commissioner also shall require that the applicant provide his or her social security number..." The Governor says that the law gives him the authority to make the change, which brings us back to the old argument about English being our official language. Perhaps the Governor studied semantics under Bill Clinton.

Nevertheless, if the Governor is right, if Lewis Carroll has taken over for Judith Kaye in deciding what our laws mean, then the County Clerks should fall in line. County Clerks, after all, have no business making their own policy on driver's licenses. Why, it would be like a governor making his own immigration policy!

The hyperbole notwithstanding, there are legitimate security conceerns involved as well. However you feel about it, the United States is at war. But what is that to us? Here is Spitzerland, we're neutral.
