Union Set To Challenge Council on Suburb Ban

Although I have no political affinity with Jesse Jackson, I am reminded of a great metaphor he used to describe the difference between being involved and being committed. To know the difference, he said, just look at a plate of ham and eggs, and think about what it takes to produce it. You know by the eggs that a chicken was involved, but that pig was committed.

Well, when it comes to education we know that teachers are involved, but are they committed? I strongly believe that not only must teachers live in NYC, they must send their own children to NYC public schools. Do that, and we will see a revolution in the quality of NYC public schools.

To allow NYC school teachers to live outside NYC is a proposal that goes in exactly the wrong direction.
