Puzzling Over Why Catholics Back Democrats

...it is often Republicans in government who cut services and programs for the disabled and mentally ill in the name of preventing socialism. Those Down's Syndrome children acting in the Christmas pagent may have a better future ahead of them than those in previous generations, but that is only because more options in supervised employment, recreational programs, subsidized housing, and therapies are available today, and some of it is because of government funding and planning.
Meanwhile, changing HMO policies threaten to cut Medicaid spending on care for people with serious mental illnesses. These people might be in a situation in which their state/local government orders them to take medications, and then denies them the drugs! Also, hospitalizations terminate when insurance companies and Medicaid bureaucrats say they do: somehow, these patients are magically cured when the time is up! It seems the most seriously ill schizophrenics are the ones in government jobs making these funding decisions!
