I also knew Jeane Kirkpatrick slightly. I was then heading the Afghanistan Information Center at Freedom House, and whenever she or members of her staff was speaking on the issue of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, they would contact me for information. When I first met her, for dinner at the U. S. ambassador's Waldorf Towers apartment, I was unsure how she wished to be addressed in conversation. After mumbling a couple of times, I asked her whether she preferred to be addressed as Dr. Kirkpatrick, Prof. Kirkpatric, or Madame Ambassador. "Why don't you just call me Jeane, " she said, "It's much easier."
You remarked on Jeane's identity as a Democrat while at the UN for the Reagan administration, but did not mention that Carl Gershman, her counselor of embassy, was the former head of Social Democrats USA, i.e a socialist -- another example of Reagan's expansive outreach -- and that of his best associates -- to American patriots of all stripes who shared his vision and put the nation ahead of party politics.
