The Halloween Treaty: Law of the Seas

Submitted by Robert McManus, Oct 31, 2007 09:42

Harold Furchtgott-Roth spreads falsehoods in his opposition to the pending Law of the Sea Convention. He complains that the International Seabed Authority would "have total jurisdiction over all the international oceans and everything in them." I challenge Furchtgott-Roth to cite a single provision of the treaty giving the ISA any jurisdiction over anything but exploration and exploitation of seabed minerals beyond national jurisdiction (that is, beyond the outer continental shelf) – provisions, incidentally, that effectively give the US veto power over new regulations, if and when we accede to the treaty. His overstatement is a central falsehood of the disinformation campaign now being waged by the "black helicopter crowd" who have not read the treaty, and do not care to. By the way, the ISA is not part of the UN. The treaty is supported by our Joint Chiefs of Staff, all former living Chiefs of Naval Operations, and the president, among many, many others.
