Annan's L'Envoi

Your editorial appears to be the kind of thinking that is winning America, our country, the worst enemies all around the world.

I am now in China and I've spent quite some years in Europe and Africa. America used to me admired so much all over the world. In chinese, America is called Meigouo, which literally means the "beautful country".

Now everywhere I go outside the US, all informed observers are privately delighted by America's miseries in the Middle East. Everyone bemoans America's arrogance, hypocrisy in the middle east, high morals only when it is self serving.

At this late hour , where our adventure in Iraq resembles more and more the soviet debacle in Afghanistan or may yet get to be our napoleonic invasion of Russia, humility should be our attitude. We should focus on our present troubles and avoid making more enemies with vitriolic diabolisation of anyone who dares criticize. I am reading similar comments where fmr pres carter is treated as a traitor for relating to the suffering of palestinians in his latest book.

You still fail to realize that the US, while very powerful, is not omnipotent and can not simply bend the rest of the world to its own will as it sees fit. We must seduce. Our leadership needs to develop the aptitute to instinctively see the world through the eyes of those foreign nationals we must win over. We can not get away for too long with jingoistic statements belittling all those who have different opinions.

Mr. Annan comments, well understood, could be considered those of a true friend. Sycophants, while giving us instant pleasure act like drugs; they slowly kill us.

I fear history will not be kind to you.
