The three white students who hung the nooses at Jena High School said they were poking fun at friends who were members of the school's rodeo team. They said they got the idea from the lynching scene in the movie, "Lonesome Dove." Their explanation is widely rediculed, but federal and local investigators told the Jena Times they are conviced the three are telling the truth. Newstores referring to the incident should at least mentioned that the allegation the nooses were hung as a racial threat is disputed. Newstories should almost mention that a federal investigation into the incident determined there was no link between the noose-hanging and the Jena Six incident.

The Megan Williams case appears to be turning into a horrific case of domestic abuse rather than a hate crime. The police had arrested Bobby Brewster, one of the suspects, and charged him with aggravated domestic battery against Williams before. They had also warned her to stay away from the trailer. A woman who is the siter of one of the suspects said that Megan Williams had been dating Bobby Brewster, The sister, who is not a defendant, supports Williams allegation of abuse and torture, but says Williams refused to leave whe she tried to rescue her from the trailers, saying "I don't want to go.
