You said your example was $291 million for 8 years. Actually, it was for 9 years. If you subtract the last year to bring it to the same length as the Yankees' reported offer, it would be $256 million - only $3.2 million per year less than what the Yankees had as their opening bid.

Reportedly, Boras wanted a $350 million offer (presumably for 10 years), before he was willing to take a meeting. If he can get that much or more for A-Rod, more power to him but try running your inflation numbers for that deal and you'll find that they don't work.
