As the author of two articles you criticized in your editorial "Colonizing Barnard," may I point out two important errors in your description of my stories?
You state that my articles in The Jewish Week and The Nation dealing with Barnard anthropologist Nadia Abu El-Haj "sought to portray her opponents as McCarthyites. In fact, she is on the record accusing Israel of being a colonial project"
Only my article in The Nation---an opinion piece---made the charge regarding McCarthyism. Neither article rejected the accusation that she accuses Israel of being a colonial project. My story in The Jewish Week, in fact, strongly affirmed this fact. My story in The Nation did not address it. The false accusations Abu El-Haj's critics make against her book are other than this---and not rebutted by your editorial.
Sincerely,
Larry Cohler-Esses
