Great article but haven't you heard of the phrase "an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure". Those diseases does not have to be in the US for the US to respond to it. It goes beyond borders and the ability of the US to address such diseases even before it reach it's shores. A number of countries do not have the vast resources that the US government has, consider this as a better option as compared to the cost the US spends on its's so called war against terrorism. It is beneficial for most people not only the American people.
It actually took a couple of years before the US responded to the HIV pandemic. Former President Reagan then saw HIV as a disease only of gay men, as a result the reaction was slow and heavily politicized. Maybe this time people up there just doesn't like it happen again.
I may not always agree on how the US foreign policy impacts on where it's development fund should go to, but some of this resaerches can save lives and not only American lives but of the lives of people in general.
