As a 52-year resident of West 12th Street (and a 62-year resident of Greenwich Village) I take exception to your characterization of Village preservationists as "fanatics." We are tired of having our historic district eaten up alive by the non-profits within - NYU, New School, Cardozo and, yes,. St, Vincent's. We are not against change that respects the look, tone and demographics of our fragile area, but do object to having huge new populations dumped in as boons to vested real estate interests. The meeting at St. Vincent's last night was an insult to our intelligence with nary a word said about the enormous change in character the Rudin enterprise would wreak on West 12th Street by tearing down authentic and sound buildings to build fake luxury townhouses.
They'd better allow more than two years for that battle. We know how to tie-up developers for a whole generation.
