Courts Gets Case Of Grandparental Visitation Rights
in response to reader comment: Let's be very clear

Submitted by Beverly, Nov 15, 2007 19:55

I have read your essay and I can tell you have let your bitterness blind you and perhaps you are not seeing clearly at all.

First, you give many generalized examples and I am curious as to where you have obtained your information, and what resources you have employed. How do you know that the targets of vindictive grandparents are single mothers? How do you define responsible parents.? Just because a parent does not drink or take drugs does not necessarily mean they are responsible in the broad sense of the word. Is it responsible to deny children the love and affection of grandparents who are also responsible? Is it responsible to deny children access to all family members, aunts, uncles and cousins who are responsible? Is it responsible to deny children access to their family traditions and history?

The harm to the children is not mental or physical but rather the harm from never knowing "responsible" and loving grandparents who want nothing more than what is best for the children. Not all grandparents are retired and have nothing better to do than take their children to court. It is the most heartbreaking decision imagineable to subject the child you have loved and will love forever to the court system.

My husband and I love our son very much and no matter what happens in court will continue to do so, but when a grandparent is denied visitation and there are no explanations as to why, then it is the grandparent's duty to do everything in their power to right the wrong. For five years we have tried to visit with our grandchildren and although we live in the same area and the maternal grandparents are priveliged to an open door policy concerning the grandchildren we have been denied access. When my second grandson was born we recieved an announcement and a picture, why???? How cruel.

We are not drug addicts and we are not alcoholics. My other son is a police lieutenant, my younger boy a student in Cortland. My husband is an engineer. And I am a Probation Officer charged with the job of recommending sentences for juveniles in Family Court and Home Visits to determine custody and visitation of children. How ironic that I have a say in the future of children regarding parental visitation, yet I am desperate to see my own son and his children. Did I mention my son and daughter in law are teachers and are "responsible' for educating other peoples children.
