The Clinton-Obama-Bush Doctrine

Submitted by George N Spitz, Nov 19, 2007 05:26

What the New York Sun calls "The Clinton-Obama-Bush Doctrine" is simply a reissue of Woodrow Wilson's "Make the World Safe for Democracy." The consequences were Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.

Spain and Portugal provide excellent examples of beneficial nonintervention policies by a US government. When faced with brutal Spanish dictator Francisco Franco and less oppressive but hardly benevolent Portuguese dictator Alberto Salazar following World War II, liberal Democrats pressed the US government to intervene militarily and "restore democracy." Fortunately, the country did not and Spain and Portugal evolved into advanced democracies without internal or external inspired loss of life. Similarly, the US did not intervene militarily to overthrow ruthless dictatorships in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. These three countries, on their own, evolved into Democratic regimes, two now presided over by women. That is the correct course for United States to adopt everywhere if we sincerely wish to end violence throughout the world..
