I loved your article about Thanksgiving and U.S. exceptionalism. As an immigrant, I too am very thankful to this country and the freedoms enshrined in our Constitution. But one small objection: You write: "When something terrible and destructive happens — a tsunami hits Indonesia, an earthquake devastates Pakistan — the U.S. can project itself anywhere on the planet within hours and start saving lives, setting up hospitals and restoring the water supply." Indeed. But when something terrible & destructive happened in the U.S. itself, i.e. Katrina, to our shame, we were evidently not able to project ourselves within hours, days or even weeks to do all those things we are capable of in the farthest reaches of the world.
