Very informative article as we Americans often look to Europe for the idea of stability based on longevity. I have always been proud to be an American, thanks in part to my mother's arriving in this country as an eighteen year old girl from Ireland in the early twenties. She was given the opportunity to make a better life for herself and for that she was always grateful to her adopted country. At the first opportunity, she became a citizen. She worked in Boston as a maid, cook and nanny until she married my father. She raised my sister and I to value education as hers had been cut short by the death of her mother. One of her proudest accomplishments was to get a job in Filene's Basement in downtown Boston. For an Irish girl, "off the boat", to work in one of the biggest stores in Boston proved she had made it. Sometimes we forget what has made this country so great. I will celebrate Thanksgiving this year and think of my mother.
