Using influence of office to dictate our freedoms
Reader comment on: Mayor Becomes Entangled by Gun Lawsuits

Submitted by Jerrold W. Crafton, Nov 21, 2007 01:39

The first thing I have to say about the whole thing is that intent would have to be proven at least reasonably for anything Bloomberg has to say, if not then he is slandering the owners. If they sell guns to persons legally eligible to buy same, they are within their rights, otherwise the buyers would have reason to sue the owners of the shops.

All of this is the age-old responsibility issue. The legislatures in this country and around the world are trying to take away the self-worth of the individual. How naïve do you have to be to not realize that persons that respect the law do not break the law, only those that do not will. Taking guns away will never stop the killing by criminals, statistics be damned. The fact remains that individuals can do almost anything they want as long as it doesn't affect anyone else. How many freedoms have the American Public naïvely gave up in the last 20 years trying to keep the criminals in check, or how many have been dictated by local, state, and federal legislatures instead of letting the people vote on them. The greatest problem is that people have become complacent about voting and at least attempting to put the person in office that has views similar to theirs. Approximately 30 percent of the populace decide the fate of all of us because they vote, and generally they are of group class, religious, environment etc. I personally do not believe that the mass should let the few guide our freedoms, because the privileged (that vote) are not as influenced by the crimes on the street etc. as much an the AVERAGE individual (that do not vote).

I would like to mention that I have been a policeman, sheriff deputy, been in the military as a military policeman, so it is not like I haven't seen anything. Also at one time did statistical analysis work so understand what you can do with statistics.

Respectfully,

Jerrold W. Crafton

P.S. I do not believe that guns should be the primary objective of criminal activity in New York City. Crime abounds there and guns are a very small percentage of their problems. Perhaps the muggings etc. would be less if the innocent were able to protect themselves and the criminals knew it.
