This sounds a lot like Professor Kerri Dunn, who staged a hate crime hoax by graffiting "Kike Whore" and a swastika on her own car as well as slashing her tires after she delivered a speech on hate on the campus of Claremont-McKenna College. I really hope Dr. Midlarsky didn't do the same thing. However, it's weird that no video surveillance was examined. It is possible that Columbia U didn't want to find out the truth. Shame on the creeps who bolster their own neuroses and self importance by faking "hate crimes," but more shame to those who help them get away with this rotten behavior.
