After Poll Indicates A Tie, Huckabee Subject of Attacks

For me, the most disturbing thing about Mike Huckabee is his scientific illiteracy. For anyone, let alone a Presidential candidate, to seriously believe the universe is less than ten thousand years old - which is actually one step beyond simply rejecting evolution - is both terrifying and depressing. Huckabee, in at least one of the mostly unwatched debates, claimed he didn't believe in evolution and that he did believe in the literal reading of the bible. He left some wiggle room as to whether a "day" in the bible is really a much longer time span, like say, a billion years, but this is just token accomodation to the facts. Science - which is not, as many fundamentalists believe, just some alternate religion - is a system of explaining the facts of the world through observation and experiment, repeatable by anyone who understands the scientific method. Any presidential candidate who does not see the difference between religious dogma and inquiry by means of reason, deduction, and observation, should be unelectable. Faith did not invent the lightbulb, the automobile, or develop the theory of relativity or electromagnetism. Without science, we'd still be shivering in caves, waiting for God to send down a lightning bolt so we could have a fire. We've had enough of the anti-science Bush administration to nearly dethrone us as the world's innovation and scientific leaders. We don't need an ignorent minister like Huckabee to finish the job.
