Archbishop of Canterbury Harshly Criticizes America

Submitted by Stefaan Hublou, Nov 28, 2007 15:08

Hello, I salute the readers in America.
I am happy that The New York Sun gives a lenghty report on these important criticisms to modern society.
In Belgium, the country where I live and work, the work ethos has become suffocating; on a population of 10 million every day 8 officially recorded suicides take place and about 110 attempts...
This is one of the terrible ways the tension and agressions can find its end, when the working ethos becomes to much. The moderns citizen suffers from a lack of group life and solidarity; in older days people would put their chaires at the doorstep and chat with each other, there was good community life.
Today the Holy Cow that is the Car has brought allienation to millions. Not to speak of the damage done to the living Earth by an oil- and technology driven society...
There is so much noise and ugliness that many do not hear the Voice of the Creator any more.
I am very happy that critical prophets like Kevin Costner ("Dances with woolves" that got Seven Oscars), Michael Moore (Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheid 9/11 and recently "Sicko") and now the Archbishop of Canterbury, speak out against the diluted and poisened form that the "American Dream" has taken on.
I know there are deeper good layers in the American Soul. In comparison to Europe, there is much awareness of the Creator being real. And it is good that democracy works in the case of George W. Bush: his terrible ideas and mistakes, not to speak of bad will, have earned him the voting of the less beloved ruling president ever: this is a success for free press and free flow of information.
Please American Christians, be critical to your politicians and your economic system.
On the other hand I have every respect for the liberties the Episcopalian theologists give to the people in sexual ethics. It is a living vine element, not to stick to "orthodoxy"; I believe deeply in the evolution of ideas, and there fore in the statement by A.N. Whitehead: "Contentedness with the existing images of God always equals idolatry". We have to get rid of certain old dogmatic concepts in christianity that impede the unification of the scientific worldview and the Biblical worldview. We need to evolve to a Global Village, my friends, and because in the end there is only one Reality and one Creator, of wich all human beings are the children, we need to give up the monolitic idea of the uniqueness of Christ and shake hands with people that honor other views on life and on God.
I appreciate the intellectual courage of the Archbishop of Canterbury, but I hope he can come to terms with the moral up to date viewpoints of Epicopalian Church indeed.
