Hillary Clinton's Left Hook

Submitted by Don Carlson, Nov 28, 2007 16:23

I suppose that I, like many anti-leftist Americans, have a morbid interest in the past lives of the leaders of the American left, always hoping to have my prejudices affirmed by history. But your article on Mrs. Clinton's student and apprentice years reveals nothing extraordinary or even unexpected--except that you undertook the project. The article is a model of how candidates for political office should be treated, of how their pasts and pronouncements must be examined if journalism is to serve the community well.

I confess that you have done Mrs. Clinton and her campaign and the public, or such as will read your paper, a kindness. For example, I mistrust Mrs. Clinton's motives, as I imagine them to be, but your article disabuses me of my fond dislike and leaves me with only dread--of a candidate persuaded of bad tenets and persuasive with them. It is likely that her manifest average-ness makes her socialist blandishments more dangerous to our political culture than are the clear disloyalty and plain anti-Americanism of people like Lynn Stewart and Dennis Kucinich.
