Underrated Raines Merits Call From Cooperstown

Submitted by Rob, Nov 30, 2007 21:47

He's a Hall of Famer and it is obvious to anyone who watched him play in his prime. It's not his fault he played in Montreal and was ignored for all those years. I find it funny that guys like Sandberg get into the Hall because "he was one of the greatest 2nd baseman of all time", which I would argue, but a guy like Raines can't go in for being the 2nd best leadoff hitter of all-time? Why is it that the position a player plays can determine how good they are yet where a guy bats in the batting order doesn't seem to matter? Most guys get in because of what they do with their batvso shouldn't where a guy bats in the order have something to do with his overall value? The guy reached base nearly 4,000 times (3,977).....is that not the job of a leadoff hitter? Last time I checked it was so what does it matter if he does via hit or walk? That's right it doesn't. He was the greatest leadoff history in the history of the NL and he should be enshrined for his body of work.

On a side note, people go on about Jose Reyes and how he is so similar to Rickey Henderson when in reality he is much more like Tim Raines. Reyes has some pop in his bat, like Raines, but he is more of a line drive hitter with great speed and he's a very smart baserunner, like Raines. If anything Jimmy Rollins is more like Rickey Henderson but he doesn't try to steal as many bags as Rickey did.
