I retired from high school English teaching two years ago. In my 37 years my students memorized poems from Shakespeare's sonnets to the romantics such as Byron and Wordsworth, to T.S. Eliot and Frost himself. Of course they came to know these poems like songs, to appreciate and love the sound and meaning. When I see a student after 20 years or so, they still take pride in being able to quote the poetry they read. The other teachers in my school did the same thing. I don't now where this writer takes his evidence from that schools don't teach poetry anymore. TF
