Freedom From Offense

At first I was inclined to feel sorry for Ms.Gibbons. Surely, I thought, the poor woman must be frightened to death. But then I read of her comments after her "release" and was appalled at her bowing and scraping to what is really a savage government. Ms. Gibbons' spokespeople act as if the President of Sudan did something magnificently merciful in not subjecting her to being whipped- as if being served 20 lashes is the kind of commonplace punishment the civilized world should be ready to accept. But the real embarrassment and tragic player in this ghastly little act is Great Britain. For heavens sake, Great Britain with its legacy of heroism and its staunch bravery has degraded into a sniveling, grovelling phantom of its former self as it sends Muslim "peers" to do its dirty work Now, this all this apple polishing could be imposture until the school teacher is on the plane headed safely towards home, but all signs say it is probably not. Has the western world slit its own throat so completely that barbarism in the form of modern sudan is allowed democratic freedoms it has never earned nor desired? Susan Gill
