Governor Spitzer, Attorney General Cuomo, County Executive Spano and all the "close Indian Point" chorus are missing the point entirely. The true danger at Indian Point is not from the working reactors (Indian Point 2 and 3) but from the spent fuel assemblies being stored indefinitely in the "swimming pool" in the long since closed Indian Point 1. This is where the danger of terrorist attack or leakage is greatest, since this is the oldest, most obsolete, and least secure part of the complex. Leave Indian Point 2 and 3 in operation: they can only be kept open for 20 more years anyway. But start clearing out Indian Point 1 as soon as possible! That means opening up Yucca Mountain, and the heck with Senator Reid and the Nevada caucuses. Also, since 20 years is hardly any time at all to bureaucrats, get started by working with Entergy on the decommissioning plan for all of Indian Point.
