Varejao Offer Scores One For Cavs and the Owners

This is relatively simple. The Cavs offered Varejao 3 years at $20 million and he turned it down. They are getting him for 3 years at $17 million. Yes, the player option for the third year is not what they wanted, but he's going to have to play his ass off for the next two years if he wants a pay increase on the free agent market.

Not to mention the contracts of Drew Gooden, Eric Snow, Donyell Marshall and Damon Jones will be coming off the books at that time and possibly Ilgauskas as well (if he chooses not to exercise his player option) so if Varejao is really worth the big bucks they'll have plenty of cash to spend on him. We're talking about $25-35 mil coming off the books and they'll have Bird rights on him to boot.
