Magna Carta for Sale — To Highest Bidder

Mr. Perot,

I am not a writer or an activist. I am simply a mom of three children who struggled to find the money to pay for three safety patrol trips to Washington D.C. For my second daughter, the National Archives was the most important place to visit on our trip. Truthfully, I was surprised and relunctant but then amazed and grateful for the opportunity to see these original documents. My daughter was thrilled. Here we were - looking at an original Magna Carta! The document that she had been taught about in school and here it was - real enough to touch! We couldn't stare at it long enough - with throngs of impatient people behind us all eager to see this magnificent document.

We would be remiss not to express our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Perot and the Perot Foundation for their generosity of loaning the only copy in the United States to our National Archives. Thank you Mr. Perot for an experience my daughter and I will never forget.

We are heartbroken over your decision to sell this great document. I am sure we don't understand the financial consequences of your decision, but we do understand that there is a great possiblity that children like my own may never have the opportunity, even for a moment, to experience the magnitude of emotion at seeing such a great document.

We hope the new owner will have the same generous spirit you have shown these last 20 years and allow the National Archives to continue to care for and display this copy of the Magna Carta. May this become a copy for peoples of all nations to see and experience.

With kind regards,

Debbie L. Jones
