The Case for P.S. 35

Submitted by Lisa Giangrande, Dec 7, 2007 12:42

When using statistical data to determine an outcome; whether a comparative of identical attributes or as a measure of growth from a benchmark/ standard - how is failure designated to a school known as the highest performing school within a district that has been designated as DINI ( District in need of improvement ) for many years?

First, it was compared to a gifted/ talented school that requires screening for entrance. Second, this Title I, overcrowded and antiquated building that houses superbly engaged students stands heads above a comparable school insofar as the outcome and student performance. Third, the previous principal was rewarded for the superb standardized scores with a DOE promotion.

In real time, the school score of F is a meaningless designation to parents that know that their children will be well served as students within this facility.

The formula is flawed, not the school performance. The author, Jackie Bennett is on target with her observations.
