Like Lincoln, Like Bush? Only to the degree: Like Grant, Like Petraeus. But to quote from the recent NYT article, "A Calmer Iraq: Fragile, and Possibly Fleeting" (Dec. 5):
"Most members of these groups [Sunni "awakening councils"] are paid a $10 a day by the American military, with the expectation that the Iraqi government will eventually accept them into the security forces and other government jobs."
By way of contrast, Grant did not prevail over the Confederacy by paying it off.
