Like Lincoln, Like Bush?
in response to reader comment: Like Grant, Like Petraeus?

The General that saved Lincolns presidency was Sherman, not Grant. And, if in fact (as you seem to imply) Petreaus bought victory with greenbacks instead of buckets of American blood (which was Grants m.o) then Petreaus is certainly a superior commander. In fact "Uncle Billy" Sherman was loved by his troops because he valued every drop of their blood, yet was ruthless in destroying Southern resources such as homes, crops, etc. He was the father of the "War of Attrition", but did all he could to avoid head-on battles. Grant was more of a butcher who put his men through a meat grinder and perserved through strength in numbers.
