in response to reader comment: people are concerned about violent crime

Submitted by Bob, Dec 12, 2007 18:17

Jake,

In reading Howard's post I see nothing there that indicates it as an "..unfortunate tirade" which is "..so typical of many gun advocates who quite often demonstrate the inability to have someone disagree with them without taking your objection to absolutely ridiculous extremes.."

Mentioning that totalitarian governments seek to disarm its citizens is not an extreme position. To say so would also mean that to resist the regulation of newspapers or speech because of the first amendment, is also an extreme position.

There are people in this world Jake who are not only afraid of what some madman might do with a gun; but are also afraid that well meaning people would remove their only recourse to self defense. I am one of those people. Remember, the police usually show up after the crime has been committed, not before or during the crime when they are needed. Defense of self is an inalienable right despite what our liberal friends may think.

Guns provide the weak with equality to the strong. To take that away would be a very sad thing, since the strong will take over and terrorize the weak.

Here are some thoughts/questions/ideas to ponder when thinking about gun control and its unintended consequences:

Why do madmen with guns rarely attack police stations?
Why do madmen with guns attack places where no one is likley to have a firearm?
Why are many women buying guns and learning to shoot?
How can there be over 300 million guns in America with only a very small percentage of them used in violent crime?
With so many guns in America, why aren't there more confrontations among emotional people as you argue?
With over 40 states allowing concealed handgun carrying with their jurisdictions, why do so few people who carry them get into trouble with the law?
Why is the frequency of mass slayings lower in states with concealed carry laws?

Something to think about before advocating the disarmament of people.
