On Waterboarding: Lesser of Two Evils

Submitted by John Spencer Yantiss, Dec 13, 2007 11:51

Once again, a Sun contributor dares to confound current thinking with the truth. Bravo Mr. Johnson! Physically removed, and insulated from even first-hand observation, a great many Americans (though no doubt not nearly as many as the liberal media would have us believe), and likely a much larger population proportion of other "Western" nations, have no meaningful concept of the tortures of living circumstances found in much of the world. So removed are they that they have essentially forgotten the absolute necessity of gaining information--intelligence--about their enemies. They have even forgotten that true enemies really exist. Life has become a movie, where such things as totalitarian governments, which routinely use psychological and physical torture on their own citizens; inter- and intra-tribal warfare; pervasive socially fostered criminal activity; invasion by another nation; and all the modern terms applied to the myriad age-old types of warfare, such as ethnic cleansing; all these things are like some non-real parade of R- and X-rated films across their TV screens. Those who would have us politely ask combatants and terrorists for the details of their operations and plans, and if they refuse to answer, thank them for their patience as we open the door for them--people wish such views should have to live in a war-torn, or brigand-infested, region for at least a year. Then they might understand the absolute imperative nature of acquiring information about their enemies--short of TRUE, physically injurious torture. Otherwise, they are living way beyond the borders of La-la land, and care nothing about even their own security, much less that of their fellow citizens; they care nothing, for the very good reason that they KNOW nothing.
