This steroid situation has a bad smell to it. Baseball should have and could have policed this problem, but it was financially inconvenient. Fans were pouring into ballparks when McGuire and Sosa were racing to establish a new homerun record.
I remember McGuire during his first MLB years. He was a skinny kid. Then one day I turn on the tube and what to my wondering eyes... it's Bluto from the Popeye comic strip. Only it's not Bluto, it's Mark McGuire.
Baseball will surrive this. The game is bigger than the players and owners, but not the fans. Even in the unlikely event that MLB would collapse and cease to exist, there will be baseball.
