Freedom Of Religion, Not From It
in response to reader comment: "You many wish me a merry Christmas" pin

It is disappointing to read so many small-minded people who are so quick to impose their views upon the minority in America.

The First Amendment was written to defend Freedom of Religion not to curtail that freedom. The Bill of Rights is about Individual Rights and not group rights. Each of us are only one person and each of us is entitled to the full protection of religious freedom by our government.

Separation of religion from government was designed to prevent our government from imposing a single belief upon the many. It is a shame that there are so many intolerant people in America who do not realize that keeping government from endorsing any particular view is supportive of that freedom and not in opposition to it.

In order that each American has the right to religious freedom the Supreme Court in case after case has interpreted the Constitution to assert that Creches are religious items and not plastic reindeer and while the display of the Creche deserves protection when done on Church and home property, it is inappropriate for Government to display creches in public spaces that belong to each and every American and not just to the Christian majority.

The pseudo war on Christmas has morphed into a Crusade by Christians intent on denying any attempt at tolerance. Happy Holidays may well be considered an attempt not at political correctness, but rather at respecting the various religious traditions among our society. Tolerance is to be respected and not scorned.

I am saddened by this discussion and the hostillity expressed by those who as Christians should be expressing love.
