in response to reader comment: Congestion Pricing is NOT a Tax

Submitted by Jim, Dec 16, 2007 10:23

People who advocate, by way of vague numbers and cliche'd sayings, that EVERYONE should take public transit into Manhattan either live in Manhattan, don't work or do business in Manhattan, or are generally very naive.

Like it or not, motor vehicles in Manhattan are here to stay. It's not the best situation, but that what it is.

It is now up to the City itself to do the best to accommodate them as best it can, by way of parking facilities at or near transit locations, and possibly express transit vehicles to midtown and downtown locations. The City had an EXCELLENT opportunity in the late 1970s, with the remains of the devastation that resulted in what the NYC Fire Department calls the "War Years" of arson, by removing the HUNDREDS of vacant buildings in the South Bronx and Harlem, and instituting secure parking facilities to bring business and business people back into the city.

Unfair taxation in the form of higher tolls and fuel taxes will only alienate those who are the produces of the City's economy and hurts EVERYONE, driver or not. No longer is it necessary to be within walking distance of stockbrokers and other commercial endeavors to do business with them, as it was 50-100 years ago. People can do business from far away and still be successful. Telling CERTAIN people that NYC doesn't want you here doing your business solely because of the mode of transportation you choose will force people and markets to move elsewhere, to the detriment of the City itself.
