I agree that we should be providing covert assistance to the Iranian people in their long trek to freedom, and I agree that the US should be supportive of their efforts. The problem comes in where the Iranian leaders crack down on pro-democratic movements because they are supported by their hated enemy, the US. They don't call us the Great Satan for nothing.

It will take delicate and constant pressure to push the Iranians to take control of their own country without triggering a massive backlash from the soon-to-be-deposed authoritarian regime. And that is very difficult to do when the Democrats have been all too glad to exploit every opportunity for political benefit.
