The possible candidacy of Michael Bloomberg for the presidency is not supported by many libertarians like me who value individual liberty and responsibility as the markers and makers of cultural health. We deplore Mr. Bloomberg's use of governmental power to force the citizenry to lead what he thinks will be better lives. We despise Mr. Bloomberg's willingness to continue to tax the people and businesses of New York City unconscionably in order to make the survival of the city's unwieldy, ineffective, and often corrupt bureaucracies possible. That Mr. Bloomberg means well means nothing. Every elitist means well but believes his goodness excuses his every excess. Is it possible that the Sun has fallen into this political pit, that its editors in their heart of hearts actually have less faith in American political principles of old than in those even older principles of imposed order that have always been with us, crawling along the dirty track of despotic self-righteousness?
