NINETY historic districts? Is New York City really THAT special?
One of the most historic buildings of them all--Yankee Stadium--is being bulldozed. Harlem's iconic "Big Apple" at 135th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. was destroyed last year; the LPC didn't hold one hearing. This is all political. Landmarking has nothing to do with history.
Where will tomorrow's landmarks be built? How would you like to own property here, and go to the government (Landmarks Preservation Commission) for the slightest changes to your property?
Add to this rent control/stabilization of one-third of NY's housing stock. More government! Higher taxes! That's the solution for a better New York! That'll make people come here, says LPC chairman Robert Tierney!
Ninety historic districts! 24,000 landmarked buildings! Is it any wonder why NYC is so unaffordable?
