Midwest Corn Boom Threatens Sea Life

There was a time I would have accepted the Associated Press's version of the latest science without question, but I am of late bothered by statements such as "For decades, fertilizer has been considered the prime cause of the lifeless spot." I want to know by whom and for what reasons. If this 'dead zone' has been steadily expanding, why is the growing of corn more to blame than any other crop? Is it simply well-known that other crops are not fertilized, but corn is? Does the Sun choose to print the emissions of the AP because it wishes to hold that organization up to ridicule, or because it wishes to appear ridiculous?
