It's amusing that Mr. Wapshott sees a Hollywood conspiracy by Sen. Obama's moviemaking supporters. It reminds of the fevered writings of other writers a few years ago who determined that Star Wars III was an anti-President Bush film. I believe that Mr. Wapshott's fears may be filtering how he sees the world as well as his movies. Americans should vote their hopes and self-interests, not their fears.
Speaking of Hollywood and movies, I recently saw the 1940s film "Santa Fe Trail" starring Errol Flynn and Ronald Reagan, who prtrayed J.E.B. Stuart and George A. Custer, respectively. The film stood history on its head by portraying the abolitionist John Brown as some madman who caused the Civil War. Meanwhile, Flynn's soon-to-be Johnny Reb traitor JEB Stuart was portrayed as dashing, reasonable and compassionate as he defended the South's "peculiar institution." Now, should I as an African American conclude that the producers of that film were apologists for the southern bigots who lynched blacks and Jews because they wanted their patrons to vote for the Democrat FDR and for not the Republicans who sponsored federal anti-lynching laws? Or were they simply just making a movie. Just a thought..
