Republicans Balk at Plan To Boost State Spending on Universities

"As best I can tell, Eliot Spitzer believes in user fees that hit the middle class," he said. "It's congestion pricing fees. It's tolls. It's tuition increases. They hit the middle class and let the rich escape."

Actually, with its high and progressive income taxes at the state level and, in New York City, at the local level, New York already hits the rich harder than anywhere else. If it's different in Westchester, that is because Westchester has chosen high property taxes rather than a local income tax.

Unfortunately, all those taxes go for rich pensions Brodsky voted for (along with all the other legislators), retiree health care, debt service, senior citizen tax exemptions, lots of personal care aides for senior citizens, and extreme school spending in the portion of the state outside New York City. That is the choice of people like Brodsky. They take that money off the top.

Leaving the rest of us with two choices. Pay more for public services, or not have public services. So having stuck it to us, please let us pick our poison and shut up.
