In North Carolina, churches. Lutheran Family Services and other agencies have sponsored the legal immigration of various Montagnard families. But, today, families such as the ones I have sponsored have family members holed up in Camp#3 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, tangled in a beaurocratic web that prevents them from coming to join their legal, green card families here. Warm houses, food, clothing, financially capable and loving families await them, and they will not become wards of the state.
But, no, after 9-12 months of waiting in Camp#3, a grandmother and youn child still have not met a US Embassy staff member. The young men -- cousins and brothers-in-law could be dragged back to their villages to face beatings, imprisonment even death.
We are ready and able to receive them all. They quickly become employed in local businesses because of their high work ethic. They pay taxes at all levels. They worship freely with our congregations. What can be done to retrieve these suffering people from the political hell in which they live in Viet Nam and the way-stop in Phnom Penh??
