Missing Playoffs Would Allow Giants To Rebuild

Submitted by ChaChing, Dec 20, 2007 17:05

This is one of the youngest teams in the league. They have barely played together 2-3 years. Among the 'newbies:' Smith will be sick if healthy, Moss has potential. Shockey is currently 2nd in receptions and 3rd in yards among active TEs, easily one of the best blockers in '07 (has his issues, but overrated is a bit much). Jacobs runs a 4.4 and hurts tacklers. Osi, Tuck, Cofield, Butler, Ross, Wilson, Kiwanuka are all young...how can you not love our future on D? Then there's Manning. Understood his numbers are hot and cold. Accuracy, Ints, fumbles, not so good. On the other hand, comeback wins: 8 or 9 with close to a 30-50 record, the ability to make every throw and spread the ball around, disregard for the NY media, road record. Note that his negatives plague MOST QBs early in their career, but usually improve with time. And again, he's numbers are similar to Simms and Peyton after 50. The positives are intangibles. Being in NY alone is something the avg QB couldn't do. Sure, draft or sign a QB to look to the future and pressure Manning a little, but give him a couple more years. There's no reason to go after a QB if one isn't available. Besides, with the likes of Dilfer, Rypein, and Hostetler winning SBs in just the past 20 years, its obvious there's much more to it. So jumping ship on him so soon would be ridiculous. What we need is play-call / coaching. 52 throws in the wind (and still saying wind had no effect), keeping BJ as the check-down after so many drops when pass committed late, passing on several 3rd or 4th & 1 in Washington. Scoring a TD late in Chicago when we could have run out the clock and kicked an FG from short. No in game adjustments - heavy mid pressure in MN yet constant 5 wide empty backfield sets for Manning. He does need better pocket presence, but does this strategy help that? We need to improve the short-mid passing game with quick slants / outs, TE / WR flares & screens on 1st and 2nd esp. with a 15 yard cusion...use it like the run (the pats, 'boys, colts, pack, jags do...go figure the best teams in the league). Maybe use a 'quick' huddle like Fassel did in 2000, so the no huddle is still a change of pace option, but still less time to think, more action for Eli. If these types of adjustments happen, the Giants are easily contenders in the NFC even this year. Gilbride needs to go, and if he doesnt soon, thats proof that Coughlin is gone too. If that doesn't help, then its soon time to look into certain players, with Manning being at the top. TC has made some big changes since last year they say, so it would be tough to just fire him, but if he continues NOT to adapt thats reason enough. Besides, in his first year, Reese seems to have something up his sleeve...dropping Arrington and Petigout, drafting Ross, Boss, Matthews & Bradshaw, signing Hedgecock, Spags...there looks to be quite a future. So rebuilding is far from the word.
